Liffey Sound 96.4 FM signed the contract for our full Broadcasting Licence with the then BCI (Broadcasting Commission of Ireland) on 7th July 2006.

We first broadcast over the weekends with a schedule of 23 hours. Since then we have increased our hours and now broadcast for a total of 67 hours weekly.

Background:

2001 group formed.

2002 registered as a Co Operative society – full title Liffey Sound Communications Co-Operative Society Limited

2003 submitted Expression of Interest to BCI to become a community radio station for Lucan & environs

2004 Oral hearing with BCI in Lucan Library – licence in principle granted with four conditions to be fulfilled they were:

Premises/Station Manager/Finance/Programme Policy

2006 all conditions fulfilled to BCI approval – Contract signed
Commenced test broadcasting in July and full weekend schedule in September.

The station was officially opened on the 6th October by the then Italian Ambassador to Ireland,  H.E. Lugio Albertio Savoria.

2007 Internet Live Streaming Tests carried out.

2008 we started regular live streaming on the Internet. Since then our online listenership has grown, not only in Ireland but in the US, UK, Australia and mainland Europe.
In April 2008 we successfully carried out our first OB (Outside Broadcast), which was a huge achievement in brining Liffey Sound 96.4 FM closer to the community of Lucan as well as our worldwide audience.

May 2008 Liffey Sound 96.4 FM hosted the Community Radio Féile which has since set the stranded for all future Féiles.

2009 Liffey Sound 96.4 FM carried out live broadcasts from the Local and European count centres as well as live coverage from Lucan Village of the St. Patrick’s day Prade together with live coverage of various local sporting events.

2010 Liffey Sound 96.4 FM increased awareness of our station within our community and in neighbouring parishes by bringing our outside broadcast studio into the heart of community events.

2011 Liffey Sound 96.4 FM was granted a three year extension to our licence  by the BAI, allowing us to continuing broadcasting to Lucan and its environs until July 2014. We revised our broadcasting hours to 4pm to 10pm weekdays and 8pm to 10pm weekends.

PremisesLiffey Sound 96.4 FM Radio Station is located in Ballyowen Castle Community Centre, it is accessible to Local People from Lucan by bus (25A) and road.

Manager – our Station Manager (Voluntary) is fully committed to progressing Liffey Sound 96.4 FM and ensuring that it reaches out and includes all residents of Lucan. S/He is responsible for the day to day running of the station.

Finance – we source finance through Membership, giving Local People from Lucan an opportunity to become shareholders and stake holders in their own station, as well as Advertising, Fundraising, Grants and the BCI Sound & Vision scheme.

Programming Policy – our policy is underwritten by our ethos & aims. We have a ratio of 60 /40 music: talk.

Our Board of management oversees the running of the station and is elected annually at our AGM. The Board of Management together with our Station Manager have a duty of care to the station and most especially to our volunteers.

Our members span the geographical area of Lucan from Dodsboro to Earlsfort, from Sarsfield Park to Adamstown, indeed our membership are drawn from the highways and byways of Lucan.

We in Liffey Sound 96.4 FM provide a service for the community of Lucan. We epitomise the true meaning of community radio with so many people willing to give so generously of their time and skills for the simple recompense of entertaining or informing their community. Liffey Sound is a station that welcomes the residents of Lucan, their friends and neighbours, where they are welcome to come and participate.

Participation in Liffey Sound 96.4 FM comes at many levels whether it’s becoming a member for the princely sum of €10, sitting in on a discussion, reading the news, presenting a programme, acting as station monitor or above all listening.

We have a team of circa 70 volunteers involved in producing/presenting/researching programmes. Each and every one of them gives of their time freely; their willingness to learn and help knows no bounds. They provide 58 hours of weekly broadcasts, many of which would do justice to our national airwaves. Liffey Sound reflects most eloquently and successfully the nature and nurture role of volunteerism.

We cordially invite you to listen in any evening from 4pm to 10pm  or on Saturday & Sunday from 8am to 10pm. Listeners are the lifeblood of any radio station and we value the enthusiasm and support that is extended and continues to be extended to Liffey Sound.
